Update on homemade battlemech

I wrote earlier about a functional battlemech that some dude had invented. Turns out, it's for sale. Any wannabe mechwarriors out there should check it out. While not exactly up to "real" battlemech standards, it shoots sponge bullets, walks around and stands eleven feet tall! It was invented by a Japanese dude, who's put the battlemech up for sale.

Here's the blurb from Geekend:

The LandWalker, a real-world functional battlemech. It's 11 feet tall, weighs over a ton, and is armed with sidemounted airguns capable of spraying your enemies with sponge bullets, who will flee in terror at your Gundam-esque fury. . . You can't put a price on that kind of fun. Oh, wait, yes you can, as inventor Masaaki Nagumo is selling the Land Walker for a paltry 36 million yen (around $300,000).

ANOTHER German Mechwarrior Site

How did you get so lucky? Another Mechwarrior site in this hideous language. This one bills itself as Germany’s Wizkids Community. My favorite part is the banner that proclaims something that seems to translate as “Hello Plastic Heroes!” Oh, those wacky Germans. . . They’re a larf when they aren’t invading someone.
So if you’re looking to polish up your German, check out the site. It could be useful one day – Frauleins dig Mechwarrior.

Homemade Battlemech Video

Check out this video of a homemade battlemech. Every fanboy's dream is their own battlemech (or ravishing alien princess who gives them superpowers or a lightsaber or. . .)

Anyway, here's a video of a dude who's invented a (slowly) moving mech. The cockpit opens, he clambers inside, and it actually moves a bit. Very cool. One debate my kids and I have often is whether or not a battlemech would be technologically or militarily feasible. They really want a Mechwarrior future for themselves.

Mechwarrior Blog -- The Bounty Hunter

Here’s a Mechwarrior blog written in-character by a Mechwarrior “Bounty Hunter” -- Stories of 32nd Century. It’s essentially Mechwarrior fanfic written in blog style, with each post being an entry in Chu-i Kenneth Tokunaw’s personal journal. It’s a bit spelling-challenged at times, but give him props for a creative use of the blog format. Here’s an excerpt:

“I haven’t been in the DCMS long, at least not long enough to be where I’m currently at. I’m a Mechwarrior, but my only real training before I joined the DCMS was in a AgroMech MkII. My family comes from a long line of wheat farmers. Until the day my Grandfather left in a dropship full of People from the Combine to fulfill Delvan Stone’s “Relocation” program. “The Inner Sphere needed to learn tolerance between it’s peoples, so peace could have a chance,” my Grandfather would tell me, ” But all it did was miss-place people to worlds full of prejudice and unrealistically forced most of our people move immediately out.” When he landed on Sadachbia, he bought a plot of land where he could raise a family, grow crops, and get away from the “idiotic gaijin” (even though, we were the foreigners).”

Crazy-Cool Mechwarrior Website: Brick Commander

My kiddos and I make a lot of our Mechwarrior terrain out of Legos. They’re uniform in size and shape, varied in color, and easy to assemble. Lego terrain is also a heck of a lot cheaper than the more professional-grade Mechwarrior terrain. The boys and I do pretty well – we can cobble together a low wall or factory complex that actually resembles what it’s supposed to.

We are pygmies compared to the Brick Commander. This guy assembles some great looking Mechwarrior terrain out of nothing more than Legos. Check out his website’s gallery to see what he has to offer. He basically packages and ships the pieces to you, at 8-9 cents per block. There’s also a mech lab there where you can design your own Lego Mechwarrior terrain. How cool is that?

Build Your Own Battlemech

This is too funny -- check out this dude who built his own backyard battlemech. Definitely a bit more interesting than a treehouse. A "Comstar Guard" Mad Cat, it stands as tall as this guy's house, and his kids can actually play in the cockpit. The steel leg assemblies on the mech weigh 500 pounds each!

Cool Mechwarrior Site: Mechwarrior Italia

Want to polish up your Italian without reading dull language primers? Check out this Italian website devoted to Mechwarrior -- http://www.mechwarrior.it/public/. Given the sad state of the Italian military tradition – they haven’t won many military conflicts since Julius Caesar passed on, I can only imagine how they fare at Mechwarrior tournaments. I imagine if you’re a German or British player, you hope to get a French or Italian opponent. What would really be awkward would be a Mechwarrior match between an Italian and a Frenchman; I can imagine them arguing over who gets to surrender to the other one. . .

Other Mechwarrior Blogs

Here's a guy who actually named his blog after his Mechwarrior persona -- Clan Jade Falcon: Iota Galaxy Star Commander Vixen X-02 'Wyvern'. He writes from the Phillipine Islands, where they apparently have a pretty solid Mechwarrior community. They blog is kinda fun, one part confessional, personal blog, one part Mechwarrior fandom. He's a Jade Falcon, but otherwise seems like a good guy. . .
