Here are two of my favorite works by Argentinian artist Francisco Muñoz. Most of his paintings are done en plein air, winning him the prestigious Altman Prize for Landscape from NAFA in 2003. He's recently been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship as well. Definitely one to watch. I personally don't like his landscapes, preferring his more personal works:
Los Orígenes, No. 14, 2004

There's further commentary on Muñoz in the comments section, be sure not to miss it.
Update -- Since hardly anyone believes in poor Francisco, this seems to say more about my philistinous qualities than it does about contemporary art. . . My first impression when the fridge magnets arrived was that they were 'art' reproductions. Heh!

Actually, these were done by the 3-year-old daughter of a friend of mine. But didn't it seem perfectly plausible that these were the works of a major up-and-coming artist?
Is that significant?
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 15, 2005 05:48 PMAs a preschool teacher of 3 year olds for many years, I thought they looked like the work of a child, at least the two on the bottom.
The ones at the top don't really look so much like the work of a child that age. Tell your friend that his/her 3 year old does a good job closing circles and has a pretty consistent pressure applied, which, at that age tends to indicate that the child has a very strong mental picture of what he/she is creating and has a good eye hand coordination.
Posted by: Kim in IL at décembre 15, 2005 06:00 PMNo fair! You had expert guidance. . . ;)
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 15, 2005 06:08 PMI was fooled. I was ready to comment how tow people can be so agreeable philosophically and so divergent ascetically
Posted by: Xyba at décembre 15, 2005 07:09 PMHah, you're a wily one, Discoshaman, but you didn't fool me. This reminds me of a John Stossel report on ABC a while back where he got prominent art critics to attempt to distinguish between "art" and children's fingerpaintings. The critics (and everyone else) failed miserably.
Posted by: Jared Bridges at décembre 15, 2005 11:01 PMMy readers are just too clever. I hadn't heard about the Stossel thing, but that sounds like his sort of deal. He's great.
It's also gratifying to know my readers are smarter than your average art critic. ;)
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 15, 2005 11:53 PMI'm just too trusting. You had me--not that this would have been the sort of art that appeals to me, just that I unreflectingly thought, "eh, well, y'know, diff'rent strokes..."
I thought the background colors were kinda cool, though--very soothing. Wouldn't look bad with a sofa I usedta sell, back in my retail days.
Loved Kim's comments.

BTW, did you know that when Matthew Arnold introduced the term "Philistine" in his writings about culture, it had a *positive* charge?
Chalk one up for the weirdness of modernity...

As a connoisseur of preschool art I'll have you know that I only missed one in the art/not art exercise. I am sure that reading the article had at least something to do with my score. . .
Posted by: Kim in IL at décembre 16, 2005 11:41 AMAnd here I had a great joke all ready to go about how his art stinks but he's hilarious on "Malcom in the Middle."
Posted by: John R. at décembre 16, 2005 12:43 PMjust to clear up a few points. i know the artist personally. he's a guy. and he isn't three until next Aug. so the work is of a lil fella just two. he is doing stuff my four yr. old isn't doing yet. like singing the ABCs from start to finish. counting in english and spanish. drawing letters cosistently etc.... lalala. some kids are just plain gifted
Posted by: mtnmama at décembre 17, 2005 12:08 AMThat makes the drawings even more amazing for that age. Most preschoolers of that age (2)are not even close to closing circles and usually do little more than light scribbles. It's not all that common to see representative objects in thier drawings.
Your two year old has at least 6 recognizable details in the bottom left picture and if it's a zebra, there are 7. What did he tell you about the bottom left drawing? Actually I'd love to hear what he told you about all the drawings.
