Our buddy Carol has this advice for parents -- Remember they are little:
"George promised to be good. But it is easy for little monkeys to forget."
Curious George by Margaret & H.A. Rey
This goes along with my advice to parents -- Remember that they're space aliens.

Or, from "Bill Cosby: Himself"--Brain Damage!
["when you tell someone not do do something, and he does it anyway, and you ask him why he did it, and he says, 'I dunno!'--BRAIN DAMAGE!"]
He claims it's the reason the parental curse works.
Not that I (sigh) would know. . . .
But my preacher's got an autistic 3-year old that I help take care of sometimes, who is a very good example of the "space alien" trope. Pastor Kanba and I talk about it as an "operating system" problems: kid's a Linux box in a XP world. Ya gotta re-learn everything to teach him.
Few things are more worthwhile. Few indeed.
Cheers!

Wow! Who would have thought Curious George would have it all figured out!
The reminder that children are little is very important. Just as apt is the alien metaphor. I love how children can be alien like. The way they think so differently is refreshing.
I like to think of my little ones as souls entrusted to me for a time to look after, teach, nurture, love...etc. They're given to me by God and I am answerable to him for how I raise and treat them. It's massive. But like pgepps wrote, "Few things are more worthwhile. Few indeed."
...gotta go and give my percious little alien monkeys a hug!
