Today's theme music: Be Thou My Vision

We sang this today, and it's been playing in my head ever since. There are some worthy praise songs out there, but I'm just so enamored with hymns. There is such a vast gulf between the classic hymns and the Jesus-is-my-Boyfriend jingles I was raised on.

You can hear the music here.

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art; Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise; Thou mine inheritance, now and always; Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heav'n's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Be Thou my Vision, 0 Lord of my heart;
Nought be all else to me, save that Thou art --
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Vision, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one.

Riches I need not, nor man's empty praise,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joy, 0 bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, 0 Ruler of all.

Ah ha ha! I had to laugh out loud on reading this:

"There is such a vast gulf between the classic hymns and the Jesus-is-my-Boyfriend jingles I was raised on."

At the church I attend we had a song which never made our youth service play list as the lyrics sound very close to 'Jesus you are my boyfriend.' We used to play it for the childrens church but it didn't last long as it was one of those jingly feel good songs that you are talking about with not a lot of solid content.

Be Thou My Vision, like many of the old hymns, is completely different. The lyrics are so full of substance. That hymn has been there to mark all the significant occasions in my life: from baptism to marriage (mine and my brother's come to think of it); the song is even great as a lullaby; I even managed to slip it into a play I performed in. I love it. It makes my heart soar! It is my favourite hymn ever.

It's a great song to have stuck in your head and your heart!

Mine too! I am -anything- but a weepy person, but one of the few times I've gotten sniffly in the past couple of decades was while singing this hymn.
