If our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan didn't need a party which supports them while they're in harm's way, I'd almost want the Dems to take Congress in the 2006 elections. There are a few reasons:
1. The Dems have NO unifying agenda. Being in Opposition fuses them, the scramble for influence after winning would fracture them apart. They aren't in any shape to lead the country, and a few months in power would demonstrate this.
2. The Republicans deserve a good smack across the nose.
3. The Dems would indulge their moonbattery re: the War and Chimpy McBushitler. Picture multiple, ongoing investigations by committees into all aspects of the Bush administration. Enough red meat thrown to the Democratic netroots to kill them all with atherosclerosis. Ask the 1998 Congressional Republicans how that helped their popularity. The American people don't like that sort of thing from either side.
4. Nancy Pelosi on television. A lot. Not only because I find her bewitchingly attractive, but because the rest of America doesn't. A San Fran Dem as Speaker of the House is a dream come true.
5. The Republicans won't suffer much. While in the majority, they still have a minority mindset. They'll do fine in Opposition. And George Bush might actually find out where he left his veto pen.
6. Two years of Dem control of Congress should help us in 2008. It will hurt their popularity AND we won't be in full control of the government in a likely Throw the Bums Out year.

Point 1 is sounding an awful lot like Ukraine...you feeling homesick or something? And point 3 is sounding suspiciously like what's about to happen here in Poland. Anyway, nice post, sad but true. Not sure about point 6 though, has control of the House ever switched after just 2 years?

Posted by: jen at novembre 15, 2005 05:00 PMOf course, I recall many leftists saying the same sorts of stuff after Bush won in 2000. The general take: the Republicans will screw up things so bad while in office that the country will be begging us to take over and implement our glorious agenda.
You're better off in power than out of it. And you need a functioning opposition party to clean out the inevitable corruption and ideological silliness that happens to either party if you've been in power unopposed for too long.
