Caption Contest and Ukraine Update -- 30 Jan

Think up the best caption for this shot, and win the mildly-coveted honor of Clog of the Week!

CONFIRMATION NEWS:

- The vote on Yulia's confirmation is this Thursday.

- Poroshenko's Solidarnost Party decided to back Tymoshenko despite earlier reports that 18 of them would sit out. That makes the margin a lot less dicey.

- Yushchenko is speaking with his usual tact about Yulia's detractors, saying he understands their actions, and that everyone involved is in a search for compromise.

OTHER NEWS:

- George Soros denies financing the Orange Revolution. He stated in an interview that he helped with exit polling, but that the Revolution was in reality a "revolt of the people."

- Yushchenko has negotiated an agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development that will bring in up to one billion Euros in investment to Ukraine each year.

- The Prosecutor General says that the date for the identification of Gongadze's body will be set next week, and the ID will definitely be done in February. It'll be done by foreign experts in either Germany or Switzerland.

See my thumb?
See my fist?
You'd better run!

Discoshaman...

Back on November 30 you posted that very nice photo of the vote tally sheet obtained through your Reuter's friend. And you provided a link to an even higher-resolution version (an 80 KB file); however, I wish for an even higher-resolution version of this image...perhaps about ten times larger, if possible (perhaps the original uncompressed file). Do you have this? If not, can such a copy be obtained through your journalist friend?

I ask as I am a filmmaker currently in Kiev working on a documentary about democracy in the former Soviet states, and indeed this is an interesting, tangible, artifact of Soviet-style elections.

I can be reached at this silly-wounding address: carrots_onions@hotmail.com

"Call me Leia one more time and you going to get a knuckle sandwich"

Posted by: Rick Zahn at janvier 31, 2005 01:17 AM

About George Soros. I am cool that he gave money, the sad thing is that he didn't give to help the Ukranians, he gave knowing that Yuschenko was not for Iraq. It is simply a ploy to hurt the Bush administration anyway possible. He is a leftist and they have no interest in freedom just a socialist utopia which we all know is doomed to failure. But hey take his money by all means. hahahh

Posted by: Rick Zahn at janvier 31, 2005 01:21 AM

"Since you insist in calling me Leia...yes, the Force is STRONG in me...and HERE IS THE FORCE!"

Posted by: Macker at janvier 31, 2005 04:50 AM

Disco, is what Rick wrote about Soros true? I know that he is villified in UA because they believe that he has undermined UA politics but this from the people who oppose him because he advocates for UA entry into the EU and his detractors include those who support Kuchma. http://www.artukraine.com/events/soros2.htm
Open Society Institution has faced reprisals from authoritarian anti-democracy regimes (Belarus, Kazakhstan, etc.)

I do know that Soros is anti-Bush but I think that is in error for Rick to draw the direct line which he has - what say you?

Have you written on Soros prior, if so pls. direct me to info. Thanks.

"One of these days, Lyonya... POW! Right in the kisser!"

Posted by: Joe St at janvier 31, 2005 05:50 AM

Hello and Rick-

I actively dislike Soros. But I really don't believe he invested in Ukrainian democracy just to undermine the coalition. If you look at the grants his foundation gave, many of them weren't political at all -- grants for medical stuff, education, etc. His people have done a lot of good for Ukraine and Ukrainian democracy, and looking at the nature of the grants it's hard to see any sort of ulterior motive.

Posted by: Discoshaman at janvier 31, 2005 07:39 AM

Rick,

???? Soros gave money to central European NGOs throughout the 1990s. What does that have to do with Iraq?

It's just a pity he wasn't more successful in Belarus...

Also, I don't see how you can characterise the guy as socialist.

Disco,

I demand that I be named "Clog of the Week".

Caption, I don't need to write no stinkin' caption. Just give me what I want or ------> I am outta here!

(Hello has heavily immersed herself in the writings of O. Moroz and his magum opus - "How to Negotiate Your Way into Anything!: No need to earn it or deserve it" and his lesser known work "Twists of the Serpent: Political Intrigues, and Strategems". Let's see if it works.)

"Braids on Parade"

------------
from article called "It's a wrap: braids on parade" about how Tymoshenko's signature style - honey-blonde, wrap-over plait - has become the height of fashion!

Sorry -- need to amend my earlier entry -- my new and revised version goes like this -- hope I don't disqualify myself by entering twice ;-)
