I'm definitely about to be flamed for posting this one. But I have to say that Team America was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Before anyone has me excommunicated, I'll hasten to add that it was a totally bowdlerized Russian translation which turned any profanity into normal slang. I've heard the original is pretty foul.
The puppetry was amazing, and there were some hilarious visuals in the movie -- I mean who hasn't longed to watch Parisian mimes get blown up or Alex Baldwin get gunned down by Kim Jong Il? The best part of the movie was the musical interludes. I won't soon forget Kim's moving solo I'm So Ronery or the brilliant spoof on Rent -- Everyone's Got AIDS.
The politics of the movie don't require much comment. They poke gentle fun at American brashness (and collateral damage) while reserving their real venom for people like Michael Moore. Probably everyone who's interested has already seen it, since our video pirates were slow on this one. . .

Make that bow*d*lerized, after Thomas Bowdler, who produced a cleaned-up edition of Shakespeare's plays.
:)
Time for true confession. As a christian and a conservative, I am NOT SUPPOSED TO LIKE TREY PARKER AND MATT STONE'S "WORK." I tell myself that all the time. "This is bad. This is vile. This is vulgar. This is rotting my mind. I should turn this off and read good literature or something."
But... I can't help it, and the guilt has finally worn me down. I'm going to come out in this post and tell the truth: I LOVE SOUTH PARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVED 'TEAM AMERICA, WORLD POLICE'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where do you start? How many times have these guys nailed Political Correctness right through the heart?
Disco, you're right about those moments in Team America. Can we forget in the South Park Movie the "Blame Canada" song? Or Satan and Saddam's gay love affair?
Wow. I feel better already. Confession is good for the soul...
Posted by: Greg at janvier 27, 2005 05:10 AMWeirdly enough, I did actually know the derivation of that word. Just mistyped. :)
My favorite new word these days, btw: bovarism
"An exaggerated, glamourized view of oneself; conceit."
Posted by: Discoshaman at janvier 27, 2005 05:11 AMGreg!
It is rare that I have the need to use the hated abbreviation ROTFLOL, but this is one of them. . .
Posted by: Discoshaman at janvier 27, 2005 05:13 AMWoot! Woot! Team America! F. Yeah!
Posted by: Luke at janvier 27, 2005 05:23 AMI'm surprised that you were only able to find a translated Russian version. The version I bought at Petrovka (in November) was in English. And yes, the movie is hilarious.
Posted by: Connard at janvier 27, 2005 12:20 PMA shining point in Trey Parker and Matt Stone's resume: they are hated by all the right people.
Did you see the full-page screed Sean Penn bought in some (can't remember which) American newspaper after Team America came out?
With enemies like that you must be doing something right.
Posted by: Greg at janvier 27, 2005 02:45 PMI have never laughed through an entire - with the exception of a few dead silent crawl under the seat moments - movie before. The funniest thing I have ever seen. The tension created by the horrid parts (anti-gotcha moments?) probably heightened the funny factor.
I would love to have a toned down version. Do you have to speak Russian to watch the one you saw? Where can you get it?
Posted by: Brett at janvier 27, 2005 03:54 PMBest lines? I nominate,
"Without an actor on the team, they'll just be lambs to the slaughter!"
Posted by: Greg at janvier 27, 2005 04:21 PM"I can't out-act Alec Baldwin!"
Posted by: Brett at janvier 28, 2005 03:22 AMHmm, it appears that I'm one of the few people who thought Team America was only mildly funny, although I am willing to admit that my perspective could be colored by the fact that I was sick when I went to see it.
I must say though, that I thought that giving Kim Jung Il the same voice as Cartman was a stroke of genius.
Posted by: kathryn at janvier 28, 2005 06:23 AMIn a time when we Americans are arguing left or right it's good to have comic relief. I mean with Michael Moore and his emotionally charged Gobbels propoganda it is nice to see someone just attack everyone and make fun of them.
Man you know hollywood hates those guys.
Posted by: Rick Zahn at janvier 28, 2005 06:35 AMBoy, I'm catching all the good blogs so late in the game!
I enjoyed "Team America" as well. Actually, my perspective on it reminds me of Kevin Nealon's Video Review on SNL: "I loved it. I was really into it. Then I was nauseated. I felt ashamed. But then I loved it again. . . ."
I about died during the sex scene (my wife's jaw hit the floor, and that made it all the funnier, but I felt so guilty about it all. I cried laughing. Am I a bad person for this?)
