AussieGirl, over at Ultima Thule, spent the day translating the text of Yushchenko's address into good, American English. What she says about the beauty of the Ukrainian language is absolutely true -- it's incredibly melodic and kind to the ear. At the church I attend, most of us are Russian speakers, but most of the songs we sing are in Ukrainian. It's lovely.
Be sure also to check out her translation note.

The speech is beautiful. Thanks very much for the link to the translation.
As a Ukrainian friend of mine pointed out, the word "Europe" and its derivatives are mentioned about 15 times in the speech; the word "Russia," none.
"Ukraine will be neither a buffer nor a contest area," i.e., nobody's backyard.
I am very impressed with the unmitigated optimism of Yushchenko--just what the country needs, heck, what we all could use a little of.
Glory to God! Glory to Ukraine!

Posted by: Hello at janvier 25, 2005 01:50 PMThanks for the nice comments, and a particular thanks to Discoshaman for kindly posting a link to my blog. Makes all that work worthwhile. Meanwhile I can barely keep up with all your updates here, Discoman, I don't know how you find the time -- but it's all fascinating. I'm trying to get my head around all the dizzying parties and factions at work in Ukraine, and you do a good job of laying out the outlines for us, so those of use not in the know of the inner workings of Ukrainian politics -- and if there's one thing Ukrainians seem to be prodigous at, it's creating parties ;-) It's the same thing in the emigre communities. But is sure makes for lively discussions.
It's almost sad to see those last tents come down, now that glorious revolution has passed into history, and events are quickly moving forward. What an exciting time to be in Ukraine. All my best wishes are with everyone there for success and cooperation.
