TulipGirl's Canning
TulipGirl has transcended mere Granola Conservativism -- granola is child's play. Each year, her repertoire of homemade goodness gets more outré. This year the list grew to include apricot chutney, amaretto cherries, apricot cordial and rumtopf. Life is good.
The World's Ugliest Shorts™
I found these in a Paris thrift shop, and took pity on them. Someone needed to give them a home.
Here's a close-up so you can see just how sadistic the clothing designer really was. There oughta be a law. . .

What, you tease us, and no recipies?
Posted by: Adam at janvier 16, 2005 02:38 AMOh! Good idea. . . I'll get on that tomorrow.
Posted by: Discoshaman at janvier 16, 2005 03:17 AMDisco,
I try and respect your francophile leanings, yet... you said you got those shorts in, where was it? Oh, yes: Paris.
Prima facia evidence of the inferiority of Gallic culture. I won't take the broad and easy road to speculating about effiminate Parisians and French military prowess.
Maybe they were Abraham Lincoln's shorts? If so, you could clean up on eBay.

Cherry Amaretto Preserves
Granola, Conservative
It'll take a day to get the others for you.
Posted by: The Duchess at janvier 16, 2005 09:47 AMWow those look good (the canned goods, not the shorts) - wishing we lived closer so I could learn to do that from you! Canning is one of the few home-ecky things I haven't at least attempted...
Posted by: Megan at janvier 21, 2005 04:06 AMI was scared to death of canning until we moved here and a friend walked me through strawberry jam. I still avoid anything that could possibly kill us if I make a mistake (ie, most veggies). I use a Ukrainian system instead of the Ball jars, but Ball jars make things easier and safer. You can do it, really! Buy a packet of surejell pectin at the supermarket and make a batch of strawberry freezer jam to get familiar with things (super safe.) Then it'll just be a baby step to using jars.
Btw, our friend who was at Covenant Seminary had a good friend from Italy who totally broke all the USDA canning "rules" and taught her some great traditional methods of canning. I don't follow the USDA rules here either, because of what is/isn't available. I bet you can find someone to help you learn after your move. (
