Since narcissistic self-expression is half the fun of blogging, we're going to start a new weekly feature: Two of My Favorite Things
From left to right:
My Berkof Systematic Theology -- still the standard for any rock-ribbed Calvinist.
My manbag -- obligatory for the young and slavishly stylish Kievite.

John -- you gotta get a REAL man-bag: http://www.haversackdepot.com/haversack.htm

Heh. I don't know. . . Once you move into bags with shoulder straps, that's encroaching on purse territory. LOL Though I sense that I'm on shaky ground making that point.
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 14, 2004 12:09 AMVery cool bags, btw. My boys have been to both the Jefferson Davis and the Stonewall Jackson shrines. I'm hoping to hit a few more spots someday when we're next Stateside. :-)
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 14, 2004 12:16 AM"bags with shoulder straps"
Well, I don't know... I grew up a long time ago now, in cattle country in New Mexico, and a cowboy never thought much about carrying TWO bags over his shoulder, stuffed with all kinds of personal stuff. His 'saddle bags' were in fact a kind of dual 'manbag,' and he often carried them around in public when he wasn't out in the wilds of 'the range.'
Now I use a briefcase - another form of 'manbag' - a little bit bigger and heavier (because they always seem to fill up to capacity over time.) And then there is that other bag I carry around - my Targus laptop bag, with lots of pockets and compartments for this, that and the other thing.
Bottom line, your 'manbag' is thriftier in size constraints than my two, one of which has a shoulder strap that I find quite helpful. LOL...
25 years ago, I received Berkhof's systematic theology at RBC in Grand Rapids (Michigan), and great lectures by Dr. O (oostendorp) to go along with the excellent text.
I'm thinking ... the bag will go out of style before the book does....
Posted by: Doug at décembre 14, 2004 11:20 AMDump the manbag (if God intended men to carry a purse, he wouldn't have given us pockets) and replace it with Shedd's Dogmatic Theology.
Posted by: Russ at décembre 14, 2004 08:20 PMah yes, the SLAVIC MAN PURSE. Just enough room for a roll of hryvnia, a pack of cigarettes, and a gun! Or the amusements of your choosing. Can't fit most books in there, though.
Posted by: Julia at décembre 14, 2004 11:53 PMIt's not a purse! It's a European Carry-All!
Heh. You guys should come over here and explain to some of the 300-pound, neckless banditi that it's a purse. No self-respecting mafioso is without one these days. It's as obligatory as the leather car coat, Mercedes 600 and surgically-perfected, hollow-eyed girlfriend.
Jared!
Good to see you, man. How's the book coming?
Julia-
The book thing is a problem. . . Which is where an uber-cool Benetton rucksack comes in. Photos for that one next week. ;-)
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 15, 2004 03:45 AMWhere did you get your "manbag"? I looked for them while I was in St. Petersburg, Russia, as the one my brother uses (which was gotten in Poland about seven years ago) is on the verge of collapse from steady use, but they all had silly little metal feet, which he doesn't want. Actually, if you spot any with just zippers up top, rather than a snap, like yours has...I'm serious. They're quite handy.

I bought my in Metrograd -- the underground mall beneath Kreshatik Street.
Bond makes them, you might see if you can order from that company online. . .
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 15, 2004 04:56 AMYes, it was his birthday present from me last year. *grin*

I think you might actually be the Metrocalvinist in the group. . . That was catty. ;-)
Posted by: Discoshaman at décembre 16, 2004 10:22 PMI almost fell over laughing when I saw the "man bag". My husband and I were in Kiev last year and saw them. As true Wisconsin midwesterners, the thought of a man with a purse was shocking. But all the men we met carried them and they all seemed like manly men. They seemed so practical to me- but my hubby still wouldn't be caught with one.
