Until the next general election. My belly button is puckering and unpuckering already in anticipation. Though perhaps that's too much information.
Regardless, the fight for the Senate is already taking shape. Sen. Fitzgerald (R, Illinois) just announced he won't be running again, creating an open seat. For the race junkies out there, check out Johnny Z's for handicapping of the major races.
And for those mourning RollCall.com's becoming a commercial site, The Hill will ease you through your withdrawal symptoms. David Keene and Byron York have regular columnist gigs there, which is reason enough to give the site a look.
Here's The Hill's brief on the 2004 Senate race:
"Also, Democrats have to defend 19 Senate seats in 2004, compared to only 15 Republican seats, and while every Republican incumbent is running for reelection, Democrats could have as many as three incumbents joining Georgia's Zell Miller in calling it quits. They include two presidential hopefuls, John Edwards of North Carolina and Bob Graham of Florida, as well as Fritz Hollings of South Carolina, who at 81 may be ready to take it easy after finally becoming senior senator after 34 years.
At the same time, 10 of the 19 Democratic incumbents are running in states that Bush carried, while only three of the Republican incumbents, including Graham, Edwards and Hollings, are running in states carried by Al Gore. The only Republicans who appear vulnerable are freshmen Peter Fitzgerald in Illinois, Lisa Murkowski in Alaska (her daddy, Gov. and former Sen. Frank Murkowski appointed her) and Hall of Fame baseball pitcher Jim Bunning of Kentucky."
